Mobile refrigeration plays a critical role in global cold chain logistics, enabling the safe transport of perishable goods across trucks, ships and buses. In Taking the Temperature on HVACR, host Jamie Kitchen and experts Jörg Saar and John Broughton detailed the unique challenges faced by mobile refrigeration systems in maintaining product quality. Kitchen began with an overview: “You might deliver frozen pizza today, flowers tomorrow – your system must adapt to multiple temperatures in a week.” Mobile systems must provide flexibility, as different compartments may require freezer, fresh or ambient temperatures. Electronic pressure regulators, multiple evaporators, and adjustable set points allow precise environmental control, a necessity for mixed cargo shipments.

Broughton highlighted trucking applications, explaining that trailers often have multiple evaporators operating at different pressures. “You can either keep them at the same evaporating temperature and switch them off when reached, or use pressure regulators to maintain independent temperatures.” This ensures sensitive products, such as flowers, do not experience damage even when adjacent compartments contain frozen goods.

Marine refrigeration presents even greater complexity. Reefer containers on ships rely on large onboard generators for power, often in combination with auxiliary systems to maintain refrigeration during loading, transit and unloading. Jörg described, “A ship may have 20 000 containers, each powered from generators. The logistics of connecting, maintaining and monitoring them is enormous.” Temperature stability is paramount during long voyages, requiring precise system engineering and operational oversight.

The cold chain extends beyond the vessel. Once a container reaches port, trucks or rail cars transport it to warehouses, retailers or distribution centres. John explained, “For short trips, insulation may suffice, but longer distances require powered refrigeration.” This seamless integration ensures products maintain quality from origin to end-user.

The podcast also covered passenger buses and trains, which use mobile HVAC systems to ensure occupant comfort. Saar noted, “Even subway cars or passenger trains face vibration and uneven loads.  The system must operate reliably under continuous motion.” These examples illustrate that mobile refrigeration principles extend beyond cargo to human comfort, emphasising the versatility of these systems.

For logistics managers, understanding cold chain requirements is essential. System design, power supply and component selection directly impact operational success. Mobile refrigeration systems must balance flexibility, reliability and efficiency to maintain product quality, prevent losses and comply with regulatory standards.

This episode highlighted that mobile refrigeration is not simply a scaled-down stationary system; it is a specialised field requiring expertise in mechanics, thermodynamics and logistics. Engineers, fleet operators and supply chain professionals benefit from understanding the full scope of design and operational considerations, ensuring the cold chain remains intact from farm to fork.
