When cooling plans go off the grid

By Eamonn Ryan

In what may be the most elaborate refrigeration and HVAC installation ever attempted, a major cold store facility recently unveiled its brand-new refrigeration system – based on what appeared to be an exceptionally detailed architect’s plan.

The drawings featured an intricate maze of lines, loops and connections, which engineers assumed represented a cutting-edge, next-generation cooling network.

Months later, after meticulous installation, commissioning and no small amount of head-scratching, the system was finally switched on.

That’s when things took an unexpected turn.

Instead of optimising temperature control across the facility, the ‘refrigeration network’ appeared to channel energy with remarkable precision… straight out the back of the building. Further investigation revealed that the entire layout had, in fact, been a highly sophisticated rerouting system – delivering beautifully regulated power to a single charging point behind the premises.

Parked there? The architect’s electric vehicle. Fully charged. Every time.

When confronted, the architect reportedly smiled and said, “I did mention it was a current design.”

The contractor, still tracing pipework with a mix of disbelief and admiration, is said to be considering a career change.
