In a region where job prospects can sometimes seem scarce, apprenticeships are emerging as a beacon of hope for ambitious individuals like Godfrey Toko Khasu.
Hailing from Kimberley, South Africa, Khasu’s story is one of seizing opportunities and pursuing passions in the field of HVAC&R (Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration).
“When I first started, I didn’t know anything about refrigeration,” he confesses. “But as I delved into this apprenticeship, I discovered a newfound love for the field.” Khasu’s apprenticeship with ACRA’s new branch in Kimberley has been nothing short of transformative. “The experience has been invaluable. From learning about air conditioning and refrigeration to ventilation, I’ve gained a wealth of knowledge.”
Among the various aspects of HVAC&R, Khasu’s affinity lies with refrigeration. “Refrigeration is what I like the most,” he asserts, highlighting the potential career opportunities and his aspiration to eventually start his own business in the field.
For Khasu and his fellow apprentices, the apprenticeship programme has been a catalyst for growth and ambition. “There are so many opportunities in HVAC&R,” he remarks, “And my peers share the same enthusiasm.”
Reflecting on his journey thus far, he recounts his path from completing matric in 2016 to pursuing mechanical engineering briefly before financial constraints forced him to seek alternative paths. “I tried university for a year,” he explains, “but had to drop out due to financial challenges. I worked odd jobs until I stumbled upon this apprenticeship opportunity.”
Khasu’s resilience and determination exemplify the spirit of apprenticeships as a pathway to meaningful employment and personal fulfillment. As he continues his journey, Khasu’s story serves as an inspiration to others in his community, illustrating the transformative power of apprenticeships in shaping brighter futures.
As he steps forward into a career in HVAC&R, his experience underscores the importance of investing in apprenticeship programmes to nurture talent and address skills shortages in critical industries. Through dedication and opportunity, individuals like Khasu are paving the way for a skilled workforce and a thriving economy.
