Exploring opportunities in perishables: Insights from the GCCA Africa Cold Chain Conference

At the recent GCCA Africa Cold Chain Conference held on August 24, Lesley Wentworth, managing director of Tutwa Consulting Group, shared valuable insights on the potential of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) in enhancing imports and exports of perishables. This is Part 1 of a five-part series.

The session emphasised collaboration and the need for strategic partnerships within the agricultural sector.

The session began with a reflection on the importance of teamwork and preparation in overcoming challenges, likening the journey in agriculture to climbing Mount Everest—no one succeeds alone.

Lesley Wentworth’s presentation

Wentworth took the stage to provide an overview of the AfCFTA. She highlighted the agreement as a significant opportunity for Africa and the world. With numerous international organisations supporting the AfCFTA, it is essential for African stakeholders to actively drive the agenda and leverage the benefits of this trade agreement.

Wentworth outlined the eight protocols that constitute the AfCFTA, explaining their interconnected nature. The first three protocols, which are part of Phase One, have largely been negotiated, although some issues—particularly concerning rules of origin—remain unresolved. These aspects are critical, as they influence how trade is conducted and can either facilitate or hinder the movement of perishables across borders.

The path forward

She encouraged participants to engage with the complexities of the AfCFTA, emphasizing the need for a deep understanding of both the challenges and opportunities it presents. As the African agricultural sector continues to evolve, collaboration among stakeholders will be essential to unlock the full potential of perishables trade.

This conference served as a platform not only for sharing insights but also for fostering partnerships that can drive innovation and growth in the cold chain and perishables markets across Africa.
