A guide to working with lower flammability refrigerants

Refcom, the UK F-gas certification body, has produced a technical bulletin about lower flammability refrigerants (A2L) in response to the HFC phasedown currently underway abroad (and on the cards for South Africa).

The objective of this technical bulletin is to advise on the changes to working practices required when working with the new generation of A2L refrigerants replacing the higher global warming potential (GWP) HFC gases that are currently the industry norm. A2L is a new safety classification from ASHRAE denoting lower flammability, sometimes referred to as ‘mildly flammable’. They generally have a much lower GWP than current common HFC gases.

The bulletin tackles best practice in installation, service, maintenance and repair work. It also deals with EN378 and Risk Assessment Method Statements, building on the Guide to A2L Refrigerants recently produced by Federation of Environmental Trade Associations (FETA) and included in this Refcom document as an appendix.

The 10-page bulletin can be downloaded here.
